We have joined together time and time again through our organizing efforts, demanding elected officials deliver cannabis legalization and expungement across the country. From the lowest ranking public officials to the president, transparency is essential to ensuring outcomes more in line with the people’s wishes than those of the special interests or large corporations.
Our coalition has joined a new joint action to demand the banning of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) for state legislatures. You may be asking yourself, why would a pro-cannabis legalization PAC care about this? It is because a lack of transparency anywhere threatens progress across the board. We need our policymakers focused on the vital issues of our time and not the priorities of greedy corporations.
In Maryland, a state Delegate who championed medical cannabis was convicted of bribery after soliciting and accepting $33,750 in cash payments through an associate to help an out-of-state marijuana dispensing company.(1)
In Florida, we saw those closest to Republican Matt Gaetz financially benefit from medical marijuana legalization after Gaetz worked closely on the issue as a state lawmaker.(2) Individuals ranging from prominent developers to “mentors” of him raked in cash.
These are just two stories of how corruption can influence the legislative process when it comes to marijuana and we don’t need to tell you that this doesn’t only apply to weed. We cannot settle for the status of corrupt influences getting rich from the people’s efforts.
Thank you for speaking out against lawmakers’ shields of silence: NDAs.
In Solidarity,
Justin
