I am very, VERY pleased to report that after a year of working with stakeholders, Senate Leader Schumer along with Senators Cory Booker and Ron Wyden have introduced their bill to end marijuana prohibition, entitled the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act.
This comprehensive legislation addresses everything from ending federal criminalization to workplace drug testing to ensuring that small businesses would get preferential treatment and support to enter the emerging legal industry. Further, the bill would guarantee protections for workers in the emerging industry, something we have talked a lot about in the past few months. We still have to go line-by-line through the text and engage with other allies on these issues, but the top-line is the same as the bottom-line: this is the most thorough and thoughtful bill yet to end the 80-year cruelty of prohibition.
We’ll be talking about our strategy moving forward on next Tuesday’s Progressive Mobilization for Legalization call with allies and would love for you to hear it first. Make a contribution of any amount to support our work to get the log-in information.
But if you cannot make it on Tuesday, never fear: we’re still going to be working our tails off to make sure that we hold Senators accountable to the will of the public when it comes to legalizing marijuana. There are a key number of Senate races that we are building up the war chest to engage in turnout efforts and thanks to our tens-of-thousands of supporters just like you, we are building the network needed to fire those who seek to maintain criminalization. Our one-time average contribution is just $12, so if you cannot make the strategy call on Tuesday, can you kick in to fight prohibitionists in the Senate?
In Solidarity,
Justin
