Today, we took a major step in passing a law that will accelerate legalization, improve state-legal cannabis programs, and incentivize localities expunging marijuana convictions![1]
Thousands of BOWL PAC supporters have sent messages to their Senators in support of the SAFE Banking and Harnessing Opportunities by Pursuing Expungement (HOPE) Acts, and today the Senate Banking Committee, under the leadership of Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) just passed the first bill with a strong bipartisan vote.
We have a real opportunity here, thanks to the leadership of Senators Schumer and Booker, who have fought tenaciously to ensure that the HOPE Act will receive a vote as an amendment when the banking bill gets to the floor.[2]
The HOPE Act will create a grant fund to empower activists around the country to push their city councils, mayors, and state legislatures to create mass expungement programs.
As you may assume, that funding stream would make it all but impossible for all but the cruelest of elected officials to justify maintaining the harm that is inflicted with each passing day of holding back our friends and neighbors with marijuana convictions.
We are close, but together, we will win.
In solidarity,
Justin
