The overturning of Roe v. Wade was a blow to democracy and freedom. Within the right-wing Supreme Court’s Friday decision, the court argued that access to abortion is similar to access to drug utilization– both things that the Court thinks Americans are too juvenile to access for themselves.
Here is a line from the opinion:
“Attempts to justify abortion through appeals to a broader right to autonomy and to define one’s ‘concept of existence’ prove too much. Casey, 505 U. S., at 851. Those criteria, at a high level of generality, could license fundamental rights to illicit drug use, prostitution, and the like.”[1]
This quotation is not a parody. This is in the published opinion of the landmark ruling overturning the overwhelming precedent of constitutionally promised abortion throughout America. Within their setting sites on other issues of bodily autonomy, including the freedom for consenting adults to utilize recreational drugs safely, the implications are grave.
The Supreme Court will stop at nothing to ensure that bodily autonomy is limited in America.
At BOWL PAC, we are leading the fight for cannabis legalization and expungement because we know freedom to make informed choices is central to democracy. In solidarity with the abortion rights movement, our organizers just made a contribution to a network of 90 abortion funds around the country and we ask you to join us and do the same.
Thank you for taking time to hear our angle at this moment. We are shocked with the regressive, aggressive, Supreme Court in overruling Roe, and this subplot about drug utilization from their opinion demonstrates the need to fight for justice in all areas of society.
In Solidarity,
