Friend,
Most House Representatives held a productive conversation on cannabis legalization in today’s subcommittee hearing, but some Republican prohibitions WENT OFF THE RAILS.
In fact, Rep, Pete Sessions (R-TX) equated the legalization of marijuana to slavery, saying “The [cannabis] product is being advocated by people who were in it to make money; slavery made money also and was a terrible circumstance that this country in the world went through for many many years”[1]
Watch for yourself:
Tragically, he is not alone in his backwards views. With Republicans likely set to take control of the House, we need to be ready to fight back against Rep. Sessions and his prohibitionist allies. Enough is enough; help fuel the fight for legalization by making a contribution today!
Look, some Republican representatives are on board with the overwhelming support for cannabis legalization in the American public. Representative Nancy Mace (R-SC), for example, was a terrific ally in today’s hearing. But too often, the Pete Sessions of the world are the ones driving the ship for the Republican Party when it comes to marijuana policy and so much more.
Together, we must guarantee that Congress follows the lead of the public and their Democratic colleagues who have already passed legislation to end prohibition and expunge previous convictions. Let’s ensure legalization does not fall to the side of the road in the next Congress. We’re building an unstoppable political force to ensure that we finally end the racist and cruel policy of marijuana criminalization and deliver justice for those who have been harmed.
With gratitude,
Rhett
