How can we legalize marijuana if democracy is for sale?

Every decision a politician makes comes with the threat of billionaires and corporate interests spending massive amounts of money either for or against them. Some politicians stand up to wealthy and powerful interests, but many simply cave to their will.

Last month marked 13 years since the so-called “Citizens United” decision came down from the Supreme Court, recognizing corporations as people, who have the right to spend as much money as they want to influence political races.

As BOWL PAC fights to embolden and empower members of Congress to legalize marijuana, we are also fighting against the private prison industry, Big Pharma, and all of the other industries that see legalization as a threat to their massive profits.

That’s why we’re proud to join our allies at Daily Kos and more to demand that Congress pass legislation to overturn this disastrous decision and put people, not corporations, at the forefront of our political system.

ADD YOUR NAME

Mitch McConnell sits at the very center of this money-in-politics ecosystem. Thanks to billionaires and corporate special interests, he’s been able to weaponize the filibuster to break the Senate’s ability to pass legislation and address the needs of the American people, including on marijuana legalization.

As we know well at BOWL PAC, the status quo serves those who benefit from the status quo—and that’s certainly not hundreds of thousands of Americans who are put into handcuffs every year for marijuana possession. And right now, the halls of power are dominated by big money interests who employ an army of lobbyists and attorneys to continue to rig the system. That leaves working people like you and I at the back of the line, no matter how popular our issues are. That includes marijuana legalization.

Big money interests have helped stymie so much progress we’ve made together. Last year, the House passed legislation to end prohibition and facilitate expungements, but that legislation died in the Senate as bought-and-paid-for Senators refused to end the legislative filibuster.

If we want to make our voices heard, we need a more level playing field. The joint petition has already received tens of thousands of signers—add your name today to demand Congress take action against unlimited money in politics.

Nonstop headlines about dark money Super PACs have numbed us into thinking that this corruption is acceptable. It’s not.

Thank you for joining us in demanding better.
