For years, the Pentagon has been allowed to gloss over its financial discrepancies without consequence, costing taxpayers billions. And budget after budget, Congress leads us to believe that the Pentagon’s unchecked and unaccounted spending on the military-industrial complex is a “necessity.” Remind you of the war on drugs?
But we can change the military industrial complex’s money grab. The bipartisan Audit the Pentagon Act,[1] proposed by Senators Bernie Sanders and Chuck Grassley, would mandate that failed audits cost the Pentagon 1% of its budget. This could recover billions in squandered public taxpayer dollars.
The Pentagon remains the ONLY federal agency to never pass an independent audit. Why? Simply because there’s no penalty for failure. It’s time we change that narrative. In reality, less taxpayer dollars flooding the Pentagon will make more room for investment in communities across the country.
Take a look at the criminalization of marijuana and the “war on drugs”—they’re symptoms of the broader oppression-industrial-complex that has dominated our government for too long.
In uniting for this cause, we’re not just demanding accountability from the Pentagon; we’re working to ensure that every taxpayer dollar is used to make life better for the people of our country.
Together, we can foster more transparency and accountability in the Pentagon and beyond.
